Why does my dishwasher stink — and what actually works

Skip the lemon and baking-soda tricks. Here's what professional repair techs actually do, in order.

If you searched “dishwasher smells bad” you got a hundred articles telling you to put lemon slices on the top rack. We’re repair technicians, not bloggers — here’s the order we actually work through smelly dishwashers in real Memphis kitchens.

Step 1: Pull and rinse the filter

Almost every modern dishwasher has a removable filter at the bottom of the tub. It twists out. Rinse it under hot water with a brush. That’s almost always 80% of the smell.

Step 2: Clean the spray arms

Pop off the spray arms, hold them under hot water, and use a toothpick to clear the jets — bits of food get stuck and rot.

Step 3: Wipe the door seal and dispenser

Pull back the rubber gasket around the door and wipe it. Old soap residue in the detergent dispenser can smell sour too.

Step 4: Hot empty cycle with vinegar

A cup of white vinegar in a bowl on the top rack, hottest cycle. It cuts grease and biofilm in the drain hose.

Step 5: Check the air gap or high loop

If the drain hose runs straight down into the disposal without rising first, dirty water can siphon back into the dishwasher.

Step 6: Still smells? That’s the drain pump.

If everything above is done and it still stinks, the drain pump is likely holding stagnant water — a failed check valve or a pump going bad. That’s when you call us; it’s a single-visit repair.
